Ancestral Villages
Trace the roots of Chinese culture in Jamaica through a visit to our ancestral villages.
ANCESTRAL VILLAGES
Almost all the Jamaican Chinese who arrived prior to 1980 were Hakka and came from a cluster of villages within 20 miles of each other, in the area now known as Shenzhen, in Guangdong Province just north of Hong Kong. That area is sometimes referred to as Fui Toong On, based on the Hakka names for the 3 adjacent districts of Fui Yeung, Toong Guan and Bao On (in mandarin Hiuyang, Dongguan and Bao'an).
The arrivals since 1980 have come from further afield, but most still are from Guangdong and Fujian Provinces.
